1. What about European labels ? When will they be introduced ? The CE marking becomes compulsory after a transition period following the publication of the harmonized EN standard in the Official Journal of the European Community. Theoretically, Member States have then 9 months to implement the standard at national level, followed by a one year coexistence period. For practical reasons, this transition period is sometimes extended. Therefore the date of introduction varies depending on the material.
2. Which organizations could show me how to obtain the CE marking ? The best source of information is the organization entitled to manage the CE marking in your sector. The name of this body can be obtained at your professional association or the Ministry of Communication and Infrastructure.
3. Does CE marking make BENOR or ATG redundant ? CE marking is a compulsory safety label. BENOR and ATG are voluntary quality labels. Apart from some rare exceptions they impose many more requirements than CE marking. Consequently they remain the best guarantees of quality for a product.
4. Who could inform me about the European fire reaction classification of materials ? The classification of materials according to their "reaction to fire" is covered by the European Commission Decision 2000/147/EC of 8 February 2000: Commission Decision implementing Council Directive 89/106/EEC as regards the classification of the reaction to fire performance of construction products. An explanatory note proposes an introduction to this Decision.
5. Can I apply for CE marking through foreign bodies if this appears to be cheaper ? In principle, any organization entitled to manage CE marking in your sector, in any member state of the European Union, is allowed to extend its activities to the 27 countries of the Union. Turning to a non-national body may however involve practical problems. |
